Hibernate facilitates to provide the configurations either in an XML file (like hibernate.cfg.xml) or properties file (like hibernate.properties). An instance of Configuration class allows specifying properties and mappings to applications. This class also builds an immutable SessionFactory. We can acquire the Configuration class instance by 1. The computer you're using to connect to the kimsufi server isn't allowed to connect as user athos to the mysql database. A detailed writeup can be found here. Essentially, you grant the appropriate rights with a GRANT command: GRANT ALL ON yourdb.*. TO athos@'1.2.3.4' IDENTIFIED BY 'my_password'; But that won't work with dynamic residential

It seems as if the Character-Set of your database and you java application are somehow not compatible. It seems to be a known issue with MySQL, as you may see here: java.sql.SQLException: Unknown initial character set index '255' received from server for connector 8.0.11
# Show or not log for each sql query spring.jpa.show-sql = true # Hibernate ddl auto (create, create-drop, update): with "update" the database # schema will be automatically updated accordingly to java entities found in # the project spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto = update # Allows Hibernate to generate SQL optimized for a particular DBMS spring
This is the actual FIX for this issue all over your code without having to cast your query columns data type. By extending the Hibernate dialect to map the apropiate data types will no longer require cast-based workarounds. +1 –

Edit: The selects might be because you don't appear to have a version property configured, making it impossible for hibernate to know whether the attendees already exists in the database (they might have been loaded in a previous session), so hibernate emits selects to check.
